Campus Encrypted Wireless -- MoobilenetX -- Now Live

Many keen CS people have been asking about the mysterious MoobilenetX wireless network that has been popping up around campus. This new wireless network is being deployed while leaving up the original campus wireless network — Moobilenet. MoobilenetX has many advantages over Moobilenet including faster logons and better roaming; however, the encryption MoobilenetX offers makes it a recommended choice of wireless networks — when it is available.

Web-based Computer Science Email

@cs.ucdavis.edu address, you may be interested in using a new
service we have been testing. We have a server running SquirrelMail
(http://www.squirrelmail.org). You will need no assistance from us as
your email is already accessible there if you are already connecting
your email client to imap.cs.ucdavis.edu.

SSG-Support and CSIFdocs Wiki update

We are upgrading the wiki server this week. The upgrade includes upgrading the main virtual server, so we moved the virtual services off the main server to some lesser hardware.

During this transition some brief outages will occur, probably less than 5 minute outages, and less than one a day. So, if you have a hard time reaching this page later, just try again in a few moments.

Blocking Outbound Email Except From Known Hosts

Following up on my previous email regarding blocking outbound email traffic (SMTP), we will be implementing the new firewall rules at the CS network border at noon (PST) tomorrow, Wednesday April 4 2007. It is possible, although unlikely, that you will not be able to send email to us in case you have a problem following this change. In that case, please contact us by telephone, click here for our numbers.

Fedora Core 5 Kernel has Buggy Delay (2.6.18-1.2200.fc5smp kernel)

There are reports of a bug that makes boot up time take longer, with errors about ATA drives. The errors might look like:

Microsoft releases WMF Vulnerability patch early - today!

Microsoft has released the patch for the Microsoft WMF Vulnerability. The procedure below covers removing the WMFHotFix patch and installing the new Microsoft update.

Installing the Windows WMF security patch:

Synopsis
If you did not install the WMFHotFix patch: Perform a Windows Update

If you installed the WMFHotFix patch: Using Add or Remove programs, remove the WMFHotFix MSI Version...” program. Perform a Windows Update, Restart.
