Bulletin: Tests Show Campus Water Is Safe

Tests and inspections of the UC Davis water supply today found the water is safe, say campus officials.

The tests were conducted after campus police received a letter this morning suggesting that a small amount of a cleaning product had been put into a campus well.

However, an immediate, complete check of campus wells and other water facilities found no security breaches. Water tests found no contamination.

    Work Notice
In the next 2 weeks we will be organizing the network closet and compiling a database of where each machine is located and which NAM it is connected. We will be using ettercap, a tool designed for sniffing network traffic, as it can easily scan and compile a list of up machines on a switched network.

Fedora Core 2 and Mozilla Problem
By: jones  on: Wed 11 of Aug, 2004 [20:46 UTC]  (3121 reads)
    Fixes
I have been having some serious performance issues with Mozilla and Firefox on Fedora Core 2. The problem appeared to revolve around DNS lookups. I had the most trouble with the Yahoo web-based email, although other sites were also slow. The status bar would say that Firefox was "transferring data from host" and just sit there. Eventually (2 minutes or so) everything would eventually paint. This problem did not happen with alternative browsers like Opera and Konquerer.

MYDoom on rampage, antivirus update advised.
By: gribble  on: Mon 26 of Jul, 2004 [19:06 UTC]  (1924 reads)
    Security Incident
Bob Ono (UCD Information Technology Security Coordinator)reports:
    Good morning,
It appears that a new virus is spreading via an email that purports to be from the "ucdavis.edu user or technical support team." The email attachment is most likely infected with a new MyDoom variant. Symantec recently released a new virus update file (7/26/04) to identify and quarantine this virus.

The campus Trend Micro email anti-virus system has also been updated with the current pattern and is catching most - but not all - of these new MyDoom infected messages. There may be yet another variant that is bypassing the Trend Micro update. It is advised that desktop anti-virus applications be updated to provide an additional protection layer.

In light of this announcement please update your antivirus software. If you are using Norton Antivirus and don't know how to do a manual LiveUpdate to get the latest virus definitions, see the SSG Security FAQ
